Re-Imagining Mathematics Education Webinar Series

Connecting Math, Community, and Culture

This webinar series invites teachers at all levels to join discussions and sharing for re-imagining mathematics education through culture, community, and teaching for social and ecological justice.

Sessions will include topics such as teaching and learning mathematics through place/land; exploring how Indigenous storywork can guide mathematics education for respectful and relational engagement in community; developing approaches and contexts for learning mathematics to read (understand) and write (transform) the world; and exploring possibilities for emerging inquiries from participants.

Session dates:

Teaching and Learning Math through Place/Land

The first session of our series Connecting Mathematics, Community and Culture. In this session four teachers share stories of math and place/land to imagine mathematics education differently. Teacher stories include the power of place and mathematical inquiry grounded outside an urban school, within a rural community, and guided by teachings of cedar on the Pacific Westcoast and taping of maple trees in eastern and western Canada.

Cassie Dusdal
Reading and Writing the Skeena Watershed with Mathematics
Cassie lives and works on Tsimshian territory in Terrace, British Columbia. She teaches middle years Science and Mathematics courses. You can find Cassie gardening in the backyard, renovating her house, or preferably, reading a good book on the deck with her dog! She also loves working with her hands through pottery, jewellery-making, and various other arts and crafts.

 

Debby Knoke
Social Justice Mathematics Talk through TikTok
Debby has taught Math 8-11, Accounting 11-12, and Economic Theory 12. She is the Career Education 8-12 Program Director and Business Education Department Head at an independent school. Debby is a mother of 2, as well as the school’s volleyball coach, and executive member of the BC Highland Dance Association.

 

Jessica Bella
Understanding Homelessness
Jessica lives in the small town of Trail BC on the territory of the Sinixt Arrow Lakes, the Interior Salish, the Okanagan Sylix and the Ktunaxa People. Jessica teaches at the local high school, JL Crowe. She has taught secondary school mathematics for 5 years.

Mahima Lamba
Kindergarten Students Investigate Accessibility
Mahima teaches Kindergarten on the traditional
territory of the Tsawwassen people. You can find Mahima hanging out at the beach, growing things in her garden, raising baby salmon with her class, inventing new recipes, working on projects in different mediums, organizing in the community and, as she says, “unapologetically creating mischief all around me”.
