Lungs of the Earth

Project Lead – Alyssa Martens

Lungs of the Earth is an immersive sound installation that strings together voices from the Brazilian diaspora responding to the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest through spoken poetry, field recordings, original music, and tactile, visual, and haptic displays. These collective works encourage audiences to develop a personal relationship to the story of ‘the last forest’ through a multi-sensory and interactive exhibition environment.

Lungs of the Earth was developed by a network of diasporic artists with Brazilian heritage, including artists with ancestral Indigenous ties to Brazil. The project team includes Alyssa Martens (Curator & Poet), Bernardo Alvarado Rojas (Sound Designer & Composer), Monika Radojevic (Poet), Patrizia Longhitano (Poet), Virna Teixeira (Poet), Kay Slater (Exhibition Designer & Illustrator), and Ieva Vaiti (Sound Recordist & Technician).

The installation will be up for viewing at the UBC Vancouver Campus later this November (exact dates to be confirmed).
