  • Dr. Nancy Perry, Professor ECPS
  • Dr. Kim Zebehazy, Associate Professor ECPS
  • Natalia Florez, Masters Student ECPS

DPL Grant recipients Christensen, Perry, Zebehazy, and Florez seek to build a digital toolbox of children’s books and other materials for educators and to support people with disabilities and their families in finding authentic representations of diverse experiences of disability. The books included in the toolbox will portray disability experiences from a non-deficit perspective. The toolbox will assist readers in locating these books, and offer suggestions for teaching about disability.

Disability is often overlooked within social justice initiatives—current conversations about decolonization, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Children’s books that depict a range of responses to and experiences of disability can further social justice. Understanding and teaching about ableism, which is the discrimination of peoples based on disability, is central to fighting oppression. Part of opposing ableism is increasing the authentic and affirming representations of peoples with disabilities in schools. As such, a main goal of this project is to curate anti-ableism content for teaching and learning in and out of classrooms. Resources will also include suggestions for teaching about the topics of disability and ableism.
